Setting up a business in Bahrain is straightforward when you take the steps in the right order. This guide gives foreign investors the full picture for 2026: from choosing your activity to getting your visa, your bank account and your annual renewal.
Why investors choose Bahrain
Bahrain allows 100% foreign ownership in most activities, with no local sponsor or Bahraini partner needed. Registration is done online through the Sijilat portal run by MOIC, and much of the process can be handled remotely. Read more in our 100% foreign ownership guide.
Step 1: Choose your business activity
Your activity decides which approvals you need and what your Commercial Registration (CR) covers. Decide it first, because some activities need an extra approval that adds time.
Step 2: Choose your legal structure
Most foreign investors register a With Limited Liability company (WLL). Other options include a branch of a foreign company and a Bahrain Shareholding Company (BSC) for larger share-based ventures. Confirm what is currently available for your case before you file.
Step 3: Free zone or standard registration?
A standard CR suits most service, consulting and commercial businesses that serve the Bahrain market. Free zones are designed mainly for logistics, industrial and export-focused businesses. The route depends on your activity, your customers and whether you need warehouse or industrial space.
Step 4: Register your business address
A registered address is mandatory. It can be a physical office or a compliant virtual office, which many new companies use to keep costs down.
Step 5: Register the company
The process runs from security clearance for foreign shareholders (usually 3 to 5 working days), through trade-name reservation on Sijilat and the company documents, to the CR being issued by MOIC. Most straightforward registrations complete within about two weeks. Our How to Register a Company in Bahrain guide walks through each step, and the documents required for company registration checklist shows what to prepare.
Step 6: Get your investor visa
Once your CR is active, you can apply for residency as an investor. See our investor visa service and the investor visa step by step guide.
Step 7: Open a corporate bank account
Banks review your activity, shareholders and compliance file, so a complete file helps. We prepare it and introduce you to banks suited to your profile. See business bank account.
Step 8: Keep your company active
Your CR must be renewed every year to stay valid. Our CR renewal service tracks the deadline and files the renewal for you.
